Self-Employed Health Insurance in Arizona (2026)

Freelancers, contractors, gig workers and small business owners in Arizona buy their own coverage. Here’s how to get solid coverage at a price that works, and the tax rules worth knowing.

Self-employed in Arizona

If you are self-employed in Arizona, you buy coverage the same way as other individuals, through the Marketplace or directly from an insurer. Your premium tax credit is based on your expected household income for the year, so estimate it carefully and update the Marketplace if your income changes.

Arizona has no state coverage mandate, no state penalty and no state premium subsidy program. That makes the federal premium tax credit the main source of help, and in 2026 it ends for households above 400% of the federal poverty level.

Plan choices vary by county, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona offers only HMOs on the Marketplace for 2026. If you need a particular doctor or hospital, check each plan's network before you enroll.

The self-employed health insurance deduction

If you have a net profit from self-employment, you may be able to deduct the premiums you pay for medical coverage for yourself, your spouse and your dependents. The deduction isn’t available for any month you were eligible for an employer-subsidized plan, including through a spouse’s job, and it can’t be more than your net earnings from the business.

If you also receive a premium tax credit, the two interact, and the calculation gets technical. Ask your tax preparer to handle it; we can help you pick the plan.

Health savings accounts

An HSA-qualified high-deductible plan lets you put pre-tax money into a health savings account that you own and keep, even if you change plans later. For healthy self-employed people with some cash reserves, pairing a lower-premium HSA plan with regular HSA contributions is often the most tax-efficient setup.

Arizona questions

No. Arizona does not have its own coverage mandate or penalty. Going uninsured still leaves you exposed to large medical bills.

No. Arizona does not add a state subsidy, so the federal premium tax credit is the main help available. In 2026 it is available only to households between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level.

Not for 2026. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona sells only HMO plans on the Marketplace this year after dropping its PPO plans. Check networks carefully if you see doctors in more than one area.
