Buying coverage in South Carolina

What’s different about health insurance in South Carolina.

Every state runs its individual market a little differently. These are the rules that matter most if you buy your own coverage here.

Read the South Carolina FAQ
  • South Carolina uses the federal Marketplace. Open enrollment for 2027 runs November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027, and you must enroll by December 15 for a January 1 start.
  • Six insurers sell Marketplace plans for 2026: BlueCross BlueShield of SC (BlueChoice), Ambetter from Absolute Total Care, Molina, Select Health, UnitedHealthcare and InStil Health.
  • The enhanced federal tax credits ended after 2025, so income above 400% of the poverty level no longer qualifies for help.
  • South Carolina has not expanded Medicaid. About 63,000 adults earn too little for tax credits but do not qualify for Medicaid.
  • State continuation lets you keep small-employer group coverage for about six months after you leave, at full cost.
  • Short-term plans can last up to 11 months at first and 33 months in total here, but they are not ACA-compliant.

Open enrollment for 2027 runs from November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027. To have coverage start January 1, pick a plan by December 15. Outside that window, you need a qualifying life event such as losing other coverage.

No. South Carolina has not adopted the ACA Medicaid expansion. Most working-age adults without children do not qualify for Medicaid unless they are disabled, pregnant or fit another specific group, and parents qualify only with income at or below 62% of the poverty level.

Yes, if your household income is between 100% and 400% of the poverty level. The enhanced credits that removed the 400% limit ended after 2025. In 2026, more than 89% of South Carolina enrollees still got help, averaging $579 a month in savings.
