Self-Employed Health Insurance in Minnesota (2026)

Freelancers, contractors, gig workers and small business owners in Minnesota buy their own coverage. Here’s how to get solid coverage at a price that works, and the tax rules worth knowing.

Self-employed in Minnesota

If you work for yourself in Minnesota, you buy coverage on MNsure like any other individual. Your tax credit is based on your net self-employment income, so a realistic estimate matters, and you settle up the difference when you file taxes.

Starting in 2026, every bronze plan on MNsure can be paired with a health savings account, which lets you set money aside tax-free for medical costs. Bronze plans have lower premiums but higher deductibles, so they fit best if you rarely see a doctor or have savings to cover a large bill.

Minnesota has no state penalty for going without coverage. Even so, short-term plans are not being sold here, so a full ACA plan, MinnesotaCare or Medical Assistance are the realistic ways to protect yourself against a large medical bill.

The self-employed health insurance deduction

If you have a net profit from self-employment, you may be able to deduct the premiums you pay for medical coverage for yourself, your spouse and your dependents. The deduction isn’t available for any month you were eligible for an employer-subsidized plan, including through a spouse’s job, and it can’t be more than your net earnings from the business.

If you also receive a premium tax credit, the two interact, and the calculation gets technical. Ask your tax preparer to handle it; we can help you pick the plan.

Health savings accounts

An HSA-qualified high-deductible plan lets you put pre-tax money into a health savings account that you own and keep, even if you change plans later. For healthy self-employed people with some cash reserves, pairing a lower-premium HSA plan with regular HSA contributions is often the most tax-efficient setup.

Minnesota questions

Yes. Starting with 2026 plans, every bronze plan sold through MNsure can be paired with a health savings account. That lets you save pre-tax money for medical bills while keeping premiums lower.

No. Minnesota does not have its own coverage mandate or tax penalty. Going uninsured still leaves you exposed to large bills, and you generally cannot enroll in a MNsure plan outside open enrollment without a qualifying life event.

Apply through MNsure, which checks you for Medical Assistance, MinnesotaCare and tax credits on a private plan in one application. If your income changes during the year, report it, because MinnesotaCare and Medical Assistance accept enrollment all year and your tax credit is reconciled at tax time.
