Self-Employed Health Insurance in West Virginia (2026)

Freelancers, contractors, gig workers and small business owners in West Virginia buy their own coverage. Here’s how to get solid coverage at a price that works, and the tax rules worth knowing.

Self-employed in West Virginia

If you work for yourself in West Virginia, a Marketplace plan is usually the main option. Your tax credit is based on your expected net self-employment income for the coverage year, so a careful estimate matters, and a 2025 federal law now requires anyone who underestimates to repay the full excess credit at tax time.

West Virginia has no state coverage mandate and no state premium subsidy. Only two insurers sell Marketplace plans for 2027, Highmark and Peak Health, so compare each one's doctor network and drug list before you choose.

Bronze plans from some insurers are HSA-eligible. Pairing one with a health savings account can lower your taxable income, which may also raise your tax credit.

The self-employed health insurance deduction

If you have a net profit from self-employment, you may be able to deduct the premiums you pay for medical coverage for yourself, your spouse and your dependents. The deduction isn’t available for any month you were eligible for an employer-subsidized plan, including through a spouse’s job, and it can’t be more than your net earnings from the business.

If you also receive a premium tax credit, the two interact, and the calculation gets technical. Ask your tax preparer to handle it; we can help you pick the plan.

Health savings accounts

An HSA-qualified high-deductible plan lets you put pre-tax money into a health savings account that you own and keep, even if you change plans later. For healthy self-employed people with some cash reserves, pairing a lower-premium HSA plan with regular HSA contributions is often the most tax-efficient setup.

No. West Virginia does not have its own coverage mandate or tax penalty. Coverage still matters, because full-price care here is expensive and Marketplace plans protect you with an out-of-pocket limit.

Your tax credit is reconciled on your tax return. Under a 2025 federal law, people who underestimate their income now have to repay the full excess credit, so update your Marketplace application if your income changes during the year.

Yes, if you choose an HSA-eligible high-deductible plan. CareSource, for example, made all of its 2026 Bronze plans HSA-qualified. Check each 2027 plan's details, since plan designs change from year to year.
