Texas plans we compare
What’s different about health insurance in Texas.
Every state runs its individual market a little differently. These are the rules that matter most if you buy your own coverage here.
Read the Texas FAQ- Texas uses HealthCare.gov. Open enrollment for 2027 runs November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027, and you must choose by December 15 for a January 1 start.
- The extra federal tax credits ended after 2025, so help again stops at 400% of the poverty level and 2026 benchmark premiums rose about 35%.
- Texas has not expanded Medicaid. Adults without minor children generally cannot get Medicaid, and income below the poverty level means no marketplace tax credit either.
- If your employer was too small for COBRA, Texas continuation may let you keep group coverage for nine months, or six extra months after COBRA ends.
- Cigna and Baylor Scott & White are leaving the Texas marketplace after 2026, so their members need to pick a new plan for 2027.
- Texas Farm Bureau Health Plans and health sharing ministries are legal here, but neither is ACA insurance and both can limit coverage for health conditions.
However you got here, there’s a better plan than the first one you were offered.

No. Texas uses the federal marketplace at HealthCare.gov. That is where you apply for premium tax credits and compare plans from the insurers selling in your county.
Open enrollment runs November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027. Choose a plan by December 15 for coverage that starts January 1. Outside that window you generally need a qualifying life event, such as losing job coverage.
No. The enhanced credits expired after 2025, and help reverted to the older rules, including the cutoff at 400% of the poverty level. The House passed an extension in January 2026, but it had not become law as of fall 2026.
